Written by a recognizable and well respected authority in the criminal law field, this Black Letter follows in the tradition of Professor Dresslers casebook and treatise, in terms of coverage, organization, and easy-to-read style. Black Letter Outline on Criminal Law mirrors the coverage of the most commonly used casebooks, and even more clearly mirrors the coverage of most professors in their classrooms. Most of the Black letter focuses on the so-called "general part of the criminal law" : the basic elements of a crime, defenses to crimes, inchoate liability, and complicity”what most professors want their students to learn. The Black Letter also thoroughly explains Criminal Homicide offenses, Rape (Sexual Assault), and the Theft crimes. Clearly and separately covering both common law and Model Penal Code principles, this Black Letter also offers user-friendly features”such as the śConversation with studentsť section at the beginning of each part.
"1L law student that found solace in this material"
Written By: Guy
My Crim Prof. didn't do a great job of imparting the ideas in Dressler's casebook. Our TA recommended this gem, she was absolutely right. Dressler breaks down the main ideas of his casebook into a tight concise version and a more in depth version. I recommend this only if you have the Dressler casebook. It might be helpful with other casebooks, but this is my recommendation and I'm recommending it for students that have his casebook, on my honor.
"BUY THIS BOOK!"
Written By: S. Taylor
I have no idea what I would have done without this outline when it came time for finals. It's so easy to read, the review questions are great, the sample essays helped me so much. I've not yet had a supplement that was this good. There are a lot of typos, but the book more than makes up for it in easy-to-read sections, a great capsule summary, and all you need to get ready for the big final.
"Perfect companion to Criminal Law Sum and Substance"
Written By: Seth Jaffe
If you are using the Sum and Substance Criminal Law audio CDs, consider this book as the written companion. It nearly mirrors the content and order of the audio. If you are not familiar with Joshua Dressler, you should be. He breaks Criminal Law down into a simple, easy to understand list of crimes and elements of each crime. This outline, along with the Sum and Substance, is highly recommended.
"very helpful"

This book was very well-organized. I particularly liked the way it compared the MPC way of viewing crime with the common law way of viewing crime. Our professor liked to stress this in class so it was very helpful on my exam.
"Helpful, but the other Dressler Hornbook is better and more concise"
Written By: AMD
This book has been helpful to me as a One-L preparing for my Crim Law exam, but I found the small hornbook written by Joshua Dressler, "Understanding Criminal Law" ISBN:0-8205-7001-X to be more concise and direct. They both have hypotheticals explaining concepts, but I would buy the small one first. If you're still having trouble with a concept, then get this one. It may explain the concept in a slightly different way that will make it "click" for you.
